Meet Dr. Shannon Rea

Meet Dr. Shannon Rea

Who is Dr. Shannon Rea?

Dr. Shannon Rea always knew she wanted to be a dentist. What she didn’t anticipate, however, was that a career in dentistry would take her on a wild adventure around the world. Dr. Rea grew up in the small town of Waukon, Iowa and, staying true to her Iowa roots, attended the University of Iowa, graduating with a B.S. in Integrative Physiology. Dr. Rea then went on to attend the University of Iowa College of Dentistry (go Hawkeyes!) and upon graduation, took a less conventional route and was commissioned into the US Army.

A Little About Dr. Rea

Domestically, Dr. Rea made her way around the South, practicing at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, Fort Riley, Kansas, and Fort Belvoir, Virginia. In June 2014,  Dr. Rea was deployed with the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division to Kuwait in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, where she was attached to a brigade of roughly 4,000 soldiers. During her time abroad, Dr. Rea completed dental missions to Qatar, Jordan, and Iraq. In total, she served 5 years as an Active Duty General Dentist in the US Army.

In early 2015, Dr. Rea was recognized for her outstanding service and skill with the Expert Field Medical Badge following a grueling two-week competition, which included a written exam, 40 “warrior tasks and drills,” extensive land navigation, and three combat trauma lanes. The final task was a 12 mile weighted ruck march that had to be completed in less than 3 hours. Of the 100+ combat medics who competed, Rea was one of only 24 to complete the competition and earn the distinction.

In Her Free Time

Since she has moved around quite a bit during her career, Dr. Rea is excited to settle down and become part of the Madison and DeForest communities. During her time working as a dentist in the military, she rarely saw patients more than once or twice as she moved from base to base; now, she’s looking forward to developing long-lasting relationships with her DeForest patients. In her free time, Dr. Rea loves spending time with her family in Iowa. She enjoys hiking, biking, backpacking and camping, as well as participating in triathlons and road races. She’s also a proud Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs fan.
