Myth: “As a kid, my parents told me it is dangerous to swallow toothpaste or mouthwash. Is this true? – Megan from Monona

Dr. Lindsey Heim: “It is not advisable to swallow toothpaste or mouthwash. Most of that is because the ingredients that are in those are best when they are applied topically to the teeth and just used on the surface of the teeth or in the mouth and then spit out.”

“As far as kids who may not know how to spit, the age varies from kid to kid, it’s best to use a training toothpaste until they get to a point that you feel as though the child can spit into a sink and then you can switch them over to a regular children’s toothpaste. They can use that just like you would for any other toothpaste.”
