Everything you need to know about dentures?

Everything you need to know about dentures?Dentures are artificial teeth and gums formed and placed in the mouth by a dentist to replace teeth that have been lost due to an injury in the mouth or that have been removed naturally. Dentures are custom designed to fit the patient's mouth and visually compare the existing teeth. They could be full or partial. This means they can either replace all teeth on the bottom and top jaws or a couple of missing teeth in the gum line.

Unlike the past decades' dentures made of porcelain and plastic, modern dentures are generally made of hard resin. This denture material is known to be more fragile than normal teeth, such that it can easily chip, crack or break if uncared for or dropped. The material also wears off quicker and must be replaced every five years or so, depending on their care. The supporting structure that holds the dentures or artificial teeth echoes the intrinsic gum line and is made from resin and similar material used for the teeth or a flexible polymer matter that fits cozy on the inborn gum line.

Types of dentures

Partial dentures are used when more than one tooth is missing or when the surrounding teeth are not strong enough to support other structures, such as dental bridges. They are not permanently fitted but are fastened to the surrounding natural teeth to hold them in place.

Full dentures, also known as complete dentures, replace all-natural teeth at the bottom and top of the gum line. They are held in place by suction or an oral adhesive and are removable.

Overdentures and immediate dentures are used when traditional dentures are too uncomfortable, or few natural teeth left. They are fitted over the roots of natural teeth. Immediate dentures are placed immediately after the tooth extraction procedure and are removed after the healing process to place permanent dentures.

Implant-supported dentures are anchored or supported by dental implants. They are permanent fixtures implanted in the jawbone and comprise a metallic post secured in the jawbone and a crown resembling a natural tooth.
Dentures should be cleaned regularly by removing and running water over them to remove food remains. When removed, the individual must regularly clean the natural teeth and gums with toothpaste or mouth soap, just as they would normal teeth. Using a soft brush is also recommended.
