Effects of Acid Reflux on Dental Health

Posted on 12/1/2023 by Weo Admin
Close up of a beautiful smileAcid reflux is when acid from the stomach returns to your mouth due to underlying health conditions. This condition is known as gastroesophageal reflux and must be managed early enough. Here are some of the effects of acid reflux on your dental health:

Tooth Erosion

Acid reflux tends to bring highly corrosive acid from the stomach into your mouth. This acid can lead to the erosion of the enamel. Over time, it will weaken the outer covering of your teeth, making them more susceptible to tooth decay and increasing the risk of other dental issues.

Dental Sensitivity

As your tooth enamel is eroded, it can expose even the underlying roots of the teeth over time, which leads to sensitivity. You can note sensitivity when you are eating hot or cold beverages. This sensitivity is a significant consequence of reflux-induced loss of the enamel.

Tooth Discoloration

Acid reflux can also change the color of your teeth. These acids slowly erode the outer covering of your teeth and make your teeth look discolored as your enamel thins. The change of color occurs due to the exposure of the dentin layer that lies beneath.

Cavities

Another effect of acid reflux is cavities. Continued exposure to high levels of acid can weaken your enamel, which increases your risk of cavities. Bacteria can penetrate the weakened enamel, which will lead to decay.

Dental Equipment Damage

If you have existing dental equipment such as braces or crowns, exposure to high acidic levels can compromise them. A weakened enamel will affect their integrity, leading to failure and necessitating a replacement.

Dry Mouth

Another effect of acid reflux is a dry mouth. A highly acidic environment will minimize saliva production in your mouth. Remember that saliva helps make your enamel strong and also helps to flush off bacteria.

Acid reflux has a significant effect on your oral health. Oral tissues cannot thrive in a highly acidic environment. Thus, ensure you consult our dentist for more information.
