Signs of Tooth Sensitivity

What Causes Tooth Sensitivity?

Teeth sensitivity happens when the inside part of your teeth, called dentin, gets exposed. This can occur because of wear and tear or when your gums move away from your teeth, revealing the roots.

Unlike the tough outer layer of your teeth, called enamel, the roots do not have this protection. Inside the dentin, tiny channels lead to the center of the tooth, where the nerve is. When hot, cold, or sweet foods reach this nerve through these channels, it causes pain. Teeth sensitivity can signal problems like cavities, gum disease, or a cracked tooth.

Discomfort From Hot and Cold Foods

If you find yourself wincing or experiencing pain when consuming hot foods or drinks and discomfort from cold items, your teeth may be signaling sensitivity. These reactions range from mild discomfort to sharper pain, highlighting the need to explore potential sensitivity issues.

Discomfort During Oral Care

Pain or discomfort during brushing or flossing is a noteworthy symptom of tooth sensitivity. If you notice a twinge while maintaining your oral hygiene routine, addressing this sensitivity and adapting your brushing technique is essential.

Sensitivity to Acidic and Sweet Foods

Tooth sensitivity can also manifest in reactions to acidic and sweet foods and drinks. If you experience discomfort when indulging in citrusy snacks or sugary treats, your teeth may be sensitive to acidity and sweetness.

Sensitivity to Touch or Pressure

The gentle tapping of teeth can offer insights into sensitivity. If even mild teeth collision results in pain or twinges, exposed dentin might be the culprit. Be cautious with the pressure applied to prevent cracks or chips. Wisdom tooth growth can also exert force, causing pain throughout the jawbone and impacting front teeth.

Tooth sensitivity is often treatable and should not stop you from enjoying your favorite foods or beverages. By recognizing the signs, seeking professional guidance, and implementing gentle care practices, you can conquer sensitivity and restore a comfortable, confident smile.
