Should I Practice Brushing and Flossing With My Toddler?

Posted on 5/1/2024 by Madison Family Dental
Dentist and child learn how to brush teethYou have to practice many things with your children every day, especially when they are very young. Both parents and teachers know the importance of practicing habits with children, which means that they are more likely to retain those habits throughout their lives. However, toddlers can be notoriously stubborn because they have recently discovered their own independence from their parents. If you have a toddler, here are some ways you can incorporate brushing and flossing habits with your toddler.

Why Practicing Is So Important for Dental Health

No one is perfect at brushing their teeth. Inevitably, you brush some of your teeth better than others. However, the longer you have been brushing your teeth, the more likely you are to have cleaner teeth. The more you practice with your children their dental hygiene techniques, the more likely they are to have healthier teeth and gums.

Ideas for Getting Your Toddler to Brush and Floss

One great way to start your toddler on their way to a healthy mouth is to make a big deal out of brushing and flossing your own teeth. You can hype up that big kids can brush their teeth and allow your toddler to watch you brush and floss. Also, allow your toddler to pick out a toothbrush they like. Since they are toddlers and they are likely to change their minds, you may want to select several toothbrushes they like, and then you can allow them to choose which toothbrush they want to use that particular day.

Once your toddler has picked out their toothbrush and toothpaste, give them the opportunity to brush their own teeth. Watch them while they are brushing and make a game out of getting their teeth clean. You can also praise them for being such big kids doing a good job all by themselves. Some parents reward their children with a sticker or a star for cleaning their teeth. Only you know how best to approach tooth brushing with your toddler because every toddler is different.
