Should I Try Oil Pulling for My Teeth and Gums?

Posted on 5/15/2024 by Madison Family Dental
Coconut oil and oil pullingMany people are looking for natural alternatives to maintain good oral hygiene because they feel it is important to live a healthy, natural lifestyle. In their search for healthy dental techniques, people have stumbled across the ancient practice of oil pulling. What is oil pulling, how does it work, and should you try it on your teeth and gums?

What Is Oil Pulling?

While oil pulling sounds complicated, it is as simple to accomplish as brushing or flossing your teeth twice a day. You select a natural oil, such as coconut oil or sesame oil. You put a teaspoon of the oil into your mouth and swish it around vigorously for 20 minutes. Then, you spit it out and brush and floss your teeth as usual. Some people choose to oil pull each morning before they brush their teeth, while others practice oil pulling as part of a weekly cleaning process.

Where Did Oil Pulling Come From?

Oil pulling developed in Ancient India and has been used by people on the subcontinent for thousands of years. It is part of the Hindu practice of body purification, and many people in India believe in purifying the entire body before a religious visit or ceremony. By swishing oil in their mouths, ancient Indians believed they were ridding the body of toxins.

Are There Benefits to Oil Pulling

Research studies have indicated there may be some benefit to oil pulling because it appears to help your body get rid of excess bacteria in your mouth. This bacteria leads to both cavities and gum disease. Studies also indicate there is no harm in oil pulling as long as you do not swallow the oil. Swallowing the oil can lead to diarrhea and stomach issues. Also, children should not attempt oil pulling, as they may swallow the oil instead of spitting it out.
