How Quickly Does Acidic Food Begin Attacking Your Teeth

Posted on 9/6/2021 by Evan
How Quickly Does Acidic Food Begin Attacking Your TeethEating high-acidic foods will have a negative impact on your teeth. Foods with high acid levels are a common cause of tooth sensitivity. These foods will derail the health of your gums and teeth enamel. This is because when starches and sugars in your mouth mix with plaque, they form acids. These acids will start attacking your teeth within 20 minutes after eating. The attack by acids on your teeth will result in several consequences.

Tooth Erosion

Foods with high acid levels will wear away your tooth enamel in what is commonly known as tooth erosion. Severe cases of tooth erosion will distort the tooth's appearance and make it more vulnerable to bacteria intrusion. Such conditions will result in dental infections or cavities. Therefore, it is important to get tooth erosion treated before it rapidly wears down the entire tooth.

Tooth Sensitivity

As mentioned earlier, acids are the most common cause of tooth sensitivity. Foods and drinks high in acid levels will gradually wear away your tooth enamel, exposing the dentin beneath. When you drink hot or cold beverages, you will experience sharp pain. This is mainly due to the exposed nerve. If you experience signs of tooth sensitivity, book an appointment with us immediately. Our professionals will fill the exposed dentin and prevent further erosion of the tooth.

Tooth Discoloration

As the enamel wears down, it becomes thinner and more translucent. As a result, the yellowish dentin beneath it will be visible. This will make your teeth look yellowish. Therefore, it is important to limit the consumption of highly acidic foods. If you have to drink acidic beverages, always use a straw. This prevents the drink from getting in contact with your teeth. Also, you should avoid the consumption of alcohol. Contact our offices for more information on the effects of acidic foods.
