How to Treat a Toothache Without Extraction

How to Treat a Toothache Without ExtractionThere are many reasons why your tooth might hurt. Depending on the kind of toothache you feel, different treatment methods are available for toothache. Tooth extraction is the last resort when it comes to treating toothaches. This is because there are reliable methods of handling a toothache that doesn't involve extraction.

Handling a Toothache

To identify the cause of your toothache, we recommend that you schedule an appointment with us. We will examine your tooth and relieve the pain. We also hatch a treatment depending on the cause of the pain. The longer you wait to treat your hurting tooth, the worse it gets. Waiting for too long also increases the chances of tooth extraction. Notably, most emergency toothaches are due to infections in the root canal. In that case, we can quickly treat it through root canal therapy.

If you have a minor toothache or cannot make it to our offices for a check-up, there are several steps you can take at home to help minimize the pain. Keep in mind that these tips are only meant to reduce the pain while you plan to come in for professional care.

Using a cold compress can help manage your toothache. If your toothache has caused swelling, hold frozen vegetables or an ice pack to the outside of the affected cheek. The cold temperatures will help numb the area and relieve swelling. This will also help reduce inflammation. Generally, cold compresses are an ideal way for temporary toothache relief. This comes in handy, especially if you want to sleep.

While a cold compress is effective for minor toothaches, it could fail to work on advanced toothaches. In such cases, you can use approved pain-relieving medications. It is important to note that there are various medications meant for that purpose. Call us for more information on handling toothaches.
