Ways of Managing the Soreness of Wearing Braces

Ways of Managing the Soreness of Wearing BracesIf you are sensitive to any type of pain or discomfort, you will need to learn how to manage orthodontic soreness. We need to tighten the brackets regularly so the teeth can shift into place. Therefore, you need to find ways to manage the associated discomfort.

How You Can Manage Orthodontic Soreness

When you wear braces, soreness will happen from time to time. However, don't despair, as you can relieve the discomfort with over-the-counter pain medications, such as Tylenol or aspirin. You can also get some relief by eating softer foods or drinking a cool beverage. Ice always helps if you add it to water and sip the cold water, or you use it in an ice pack. You can also take ice and massage it on the soreness before using your finger to massage the site. Ice numbs the area and helps relieve redness, inflammation, and swelling.

Other Measures to Take

We usually will give you orthodontic wax to take with you home. This is done to relieve any scratches or soreness caused by a bracket. Take a piece of wax and cover the bracket to protect the inside of your cheek. Always remove the wax before you brush and floss and add some more wax after you get done with your regular routine of dental hygiene. While wearing braces, it is important to remember to brush and floss daily. You should follow a routine of regular dental care, brushing the teeth at least twice daily and flossing at least once a day. If you can, brush and floss after you eat if you are at school or work. Taking good care of your teeth and gums can relieve a good deal of discomfort.

Be patient if you have some soreness. It will usually subside. You will become acclimated to wearing braces and dealing with some periodic episodes of minor discomfort. Remember, you may have some discomfort each time you have your braces tightened. Often, it helps to use an oral anesthetic to provide you with relief.
