What is Botox
Botulinum toxin (Botox®, Xeomin) is a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium A. Botulinum toxin can relax the muscles on areas of the face and neck which cause wrinkles associated with facial expressions or muscles causing facial pain. Treatment with botulinum toxin can cause your facial expression lines or wrinkles to be less noticeable or essentially disappear.
Additionally, if you suffer chronic headaches, migraines, or jaw tightness, Botox injections can often drastically reduce the frequency and severity of your headaches.
Areas most frequently treated are:
| • |
glabellar area of frown lines, located between the eyes
|
| • |
crow’s feet (lateral areas of the eyes)
|
| • |
forehead wrinkles
|
| • |
radial lip lines (water bottle lines)
|
| • |
masseter and temporalis muscles (clenching) |
Botox is diluted to a very controlled solution and when injected into the muscles with a very thin needle, it is almost painless. Patients may feel a slight burning sensation while the solution is being injected. The procedure takes about 15-20 minutes, and the results can last up to 3 months. With repeated treatments, the results may tend to last longer.

FAQs
How is Botox used in dentistry?
Botox may be used in dentistry to help relax specific facial or jaw muscles that contribute to clenching, grinding, jaw tension, or certain facial discomfort concerns. It may also be used for cosmetic goals related to facial lines around the smile. At Madison Family Dental Associates, our dentists will evaluate your needs and explain whether Botox is appropriate for your treatment goals.
Who is a good candidate for Botox treatment?
A good candidate for Botox may be someone with facial muscle tension, jaw discomfort, symptoms related to clenching or grinding, or cosmetic concerns such as fine lines. Our dental team will review your health history, symptoms, medications, and goals before recommending treatment.
Can Botox help with jaw clenching or TMJ-related discomfort?
Botox may help certain patients by relaxing overactive jaw muscles that contribute to clenching, grinding, or muscle-related jaw discomfort. It is not the right solution for every TMJ concern, so our dentists will examine your bite, jaw movement, and symptoms to determine whether it may fit into your care plan.
What should I expect during a Botox appointment?
During a Botox appointment, our dental team will discuss your concerns, identify the treatment areas, and use small injections in targeted muscles. The visit is typically brief, and most patients can return to normal daily activities soon after receiving care.
How long do Botox results last?
Botox results are temporary and vary from patient to patient based on the treatment area, muscle activity, and individual response. Madison Family Dental Associates will explain what to expect after treatment and when follow-up care may be recommended to maintain your results.
Is Botox safe when provided by a dentist?
Botox can be safe for appropriate candidates when provided by a trained dental professional who understands facial muscles, jaw function, and oral anatomy. Before treatment, our dentists will review your medical history and discuss any factors that could affect safety or results. |
