Fluoride Treatment Madison WIFluoride is an easy way to give the enamel on kids' teeth a quick boost, similar to how drinking milk can strengthen their bones. Madison Family Dental Associates performs fluoride treatments as part of our standard cleanings and dentistry for kids dental exams. The Safety of FluorideThere is a large body of both peer-reviewed evidence and decades of fluoride usage that demonstrates the high degree of both safety and efficacy. We would not use fluoride if we did not think that it is both extremely safe and beneficial to the health of your child's teeth. Fluoride has been endorsed by a number of public health groups, including the American Dental Association and the Food and Drug Association. If you have any concerns or questions about fluoride and how we use it, we welcome your questions. Getting a Fluoride TreatmentFluoride treatments are considered a standard part of every cleaning that we perform. The process is very quick and easy. Application is simple, taking only a few minutes. A coat of fluoride varnish is painted onto every tooth, giving them a direct dose that cannot be obtained from water or toothpaste. The varnish will need time to absorb into the enamel, so try to avoid brushing or anything else that will disrupt the absorption. Even sensitive teeth and gums should feel nothing, and while there is a slight taste to it, many kids report that they enjoy it. You might observe a slight degree of yellowing or stickiness, but this is normal and will go away. Your child should avoid eating and drinking for a few hours after the fluoride is applied. Does Your Child Need Fluoride?Chances are that like most kids, your child is not getting enough fluoride from their daily diet and toothpaste. Building up strong enamel while they are still young provides extensive benefits for the future of their smile. Fluoride Treatment for Older ChildrenFor older children, we may use a different type of fluoride treatment. Instead of painting a varnish on the teeth, we may take a disposable mouth tray and fill it with a special fluoride gel. We place this tray over the teeth, and the child bites down to hold them in place. They hold the trays in place for several minutes. This type of fluoride does not create a barrier, but it is still very effective at strengthening the enamel. Does Everyone Need a Fluoride Treatment?Because there is no downside to a fluoride treatment, we typically do one at the end of every six-month checkup. Regardless of age, every patient we see can benefit from this. If you have poor oral health, we may actually have you come in more often for a treatment. This is also the case with those who suffer from chronic dry mouth or related issues. If you have not had a six-month checkup and cleaning recently, it may be time for you to come see us. fluoride treatment madisonIf you would like to learn more about the benefits of fluoride treatments or are ready to get your child established with a caring pediatric dental team, then it is time to see us at Madison Family Dental Associates.
