Your tooth could be damaged beyond repair, either by infection or injury. In such cases, it becomes necessary for the tooth to be extracted. Tooth extraction involves removing the tooth from its socket in the jaw bone. Tooth extraction can be a simple procedure through which a visible tooth is pulled out, or it can be a complex surgical procedure. The surgical procedure is normally done when the tooth that needs to be extracted is underneath the gums.

When is Tooth Extraction Necessary?

As mentioned above, tooth extraction is recommended when the tooth has been severely damaged. Teeth are normally damaged by tooth decay or injury. Apart from tooth damage, there are a couple of other situations that might necessitate tooth extraction.

Some people have extra teeth that either grow on top of other teeth or block other teeth from coming out at the right spots. Such teeth might need to be extracted, especially if they are concerned about their appearance. Also, when teeth are being repositioned and realigned with braces and aligners, space distribution might be affected. That might necessitate the removal of a tooth so that the rest of the teeth can properly fit in place.

Also, people undergoing cancer treatment tend to have weakened immune systems. Cancer drugs and chemotherapy weaken the immune system. Teeth become infected when the immune system is low. Such teeth might need to be extracted as well.

Tooth Extraction Procedures

Visible Tooth Pull-out

This is a simple procedure that is used to extract visible teeth in your mouth. A tool called an elevator is used to loosen the tooth, and then a pair of forceps is used to pull it out. Our dentists are very experienced and will ensure they cause minimal discomfort during the process.

Surgical Extraction

Surgical tooth extraction is a bit more complex as it involves cutting into the gums, to access a tooth underneath.
This situation can occur in two ways. One, the tooth might have broken along the gumline as a result of an injury. Two, some people have ingrown teeth that haven’t erupted above the gums.

Precaution

Ensure you have your full medical history with you when you go in for a tooth extraction. Our dentists must examine your medical history before they can commence the extraction procedure. You should not undergo an extraction procedure if you are taking some intravenous medication such as bisphosphonates. An extraction while under such mediation or immediately after could cause osteonecrosis (death of bone) of the jaw bone.
